Choking on My Own Truth - Literally

"I've only read about this in books!" he exclaimed, with obvious excitement and honestly, a little too much glee for the situation at hand.

Not the thing you want to hear from the DOCTOR about to perform a complicated surgery on you.

..But here we were! Hospital gown and all.

A place I seemed to find myself often: in paper gowns, staring into the eyes of perplexed doctors.

It was 2012, at the very height of me hiding my spiritual abilities from the world. Read: I wasn't speaking my truth.

In fact, I was barely able to voice an opinion without breaking into tears.

Standing in my apartment snacking over the sink (as one does), I suddenly had very little air passage available in my throat.

My tongue had swelled up like a balloon.

Thinking I was having an allergic reaction, I immediately drove myself to the hospital, where I became a sort of spectacle with doctors filing in and out, peering into my mouth and muttering in disbelief to each other.

The intensity of the situation lessened when Doctors determined it was not an allergic reaction, but a ruptured a salivary gland which was making it difficult for me to speak.

My voice, the thing I had been suppressing, was now LITERALLY stuck in my throat.

And honestly I can't think of a better explanation for how our mind, body and soul are truly connected.

We've all experienced the mind-body connection at some point. Like how stress can give us a headache, or anxiety can give us a belly ache.

But it would take me some years before I realized my soul was also speaking to me. And the more I abandoned myself or tried to walk away from my truth, the louder it became.

I didn't connect the dots at the time - the dots being that I was refusing to speak my truth and my literal vocal passageway had been obstructed. But as I began to share with the world my truth, my needs, my opinions, and even my boundaries, I started to pay more attention to how my body reacted when I silenced myself.

And it was reacting.

During that time, one of the practices I implemented to help me find my voice - and get more comfortable with using it - was chanting.

Yes, chanting.

At first I would hide in my office, peek out the window, and make sure the neighbors weren't outside to hear me.

My voice cracked.

I felt so self-conscious.

And I went quiet anytime a car drove by or a floorboard creaked.

But over time I grew more confident. I could feel the vibration it created in my throat. I could feel my own power running through my body and my voice got louder.

And then it grew stronger.

Eventually, I didn't care who was around, and it has become a staple part of my own ritual.

If you're thinking to yourself I like the sound of this (pun intended), let’s take a look at some of the benefits of chanting (and even just singing!):

  • It’s a stress reducer
  • Encourages presence with ourselves and focus
  • It’s an emotional release or expressive outlet
  • It releases endorphins
  • It helps with memory recall (we can all recite our favorite song from when we were kids even if we haven’t heard it in decades)
  • Chanting encourages the flow of energy through the throat, which creates a vibration that promotes clearer self-expression

It doesn't have to sound pretty, you're not auditioning for a spot on Broadway, you just have to let it move through you, to feel it.

If you're anything like me and you've been swallowing your opinions, your needs, or even your truth, it may feel difficult at first. But building your capacity to allow sound to move through you might be a great place to start.

Just like that Doctor was not at all afraid to admit he'd never removed a salivary gland before.. your words, your needs, and your truth deserve space in this world, too.

With love,

Danica

In this episode I’m sharing my personal journey into mediumship, what it’s like to channel, and how I learned to trust the messages I receive. Letters to the Sensitive Soul

Hi! I'm Danica, a medium, intuitive guide, and author. My work is devoted to creating supportive spaces for highly sensitive folks to reconnect with themselves, their bodies, and their inner wisdom. I weave together intuitive guidance, somatic practices, and trauma-informed tools to help ease perfectionism, soften self-criticism, and strengthen self-trust, because I believe spirituality isn’t about transcending ourselves, but deepening into who we are.

When I handed in my manuscript to my publisher this past May, I thought a few things might happen: I might feel really vulnerable for having my story "out there." I might celebrate with friends and family for completing a milestone. Or maybe I would simply exhale a huge sigh of relief. What actually happened took me by surprise. After I pressed send on years of hard work, I crumpled onto the kitchen floor and cried for a really long time. Like, an exceptionally long time. And then I took a...

When I was 7 years old I watched a National Geographic documentary with my family. It was about shrimping (shrimp fishing?) and I remember the crew pulling up their fishing nets to reveal hundreds of dead dolphins, turtles, and other sea life. All. That. Destruction...and they only collected a measly 6 shrimp for profit. I was horrified. While my family seemed to watch with interest and continued about their day, my world had been turned upside down. I locked myself in the bathroom and cried...

Are you waiting for permission to follow your dreams? I definitely was. I always wanted to be a writer. Partly because my introverted and highly sensitive self loved the idea of being alone in a cabin, overlooking a vast river, writing quietly with a cup of coffee. *Bliss* But mostly because I had a love of words and stories. I love to hear people’s stories. I love to share stories. And books have been so transformative on my own journey of healing and self-discovery - finding hope in others'...
