When Your Heart Hurts for the World
Published 3 months ago • 3 min read
When I was 7 years old I watched a National Geographic documentary with my family. It was about shrimping (shrimp fishing?) and I remember the crew pulling up their fishing nets to reveal hundreds of dead dolphins, turtles, and other sea life.
All. That. Destruction...and they only collected a measly 6 shrimp for profit.
I was horrified. While my family seemed to watch with interest and continued about their day, my world had been turned upside down. I locked myself in the bathroom and cried at the greed, destruction, and senselessness of it all.
Why are they allowed to do this? I wondered.
And I haven't stopped wondering as the reality of the human experience has seemed to keep me in a state that feels perpetually broken open.
I often felt like I was drowning in the pain of the world. And if you are reading this, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean.
Especially right now.
The Weight of Being a Deep Feeler
I often talk about how our sensitivity is our superpower. But I also know that sometimes, being a deep feeler can feel like too much.
And if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, know that you’re not alone.
Our news feeds are filled with destruction, violence, and greed and our nervous systems feel liked tangled, glitching messes. Our hearts are breaking wide open on a daily basis while we still have to potty train our kids, care for aging parents, buy school supplies, fill out insurance paperwork, build our careers, heal our trauma, and try to fold the never ending pile of laundry.
If you feel like it's all too much, it's because it is.
Where do we even start?
Focusing on What’s Within Our Control
There are a million things beyond our control. Focus on what is within your ability and capacity to do, and you will find your power when you feel powerless.
What is Within Your Control?
Maybe it's to donate to an organization that is helping
Maybe it's joining a local group that's taking action toward something that matters to you
Maybe it's focusing on just one achievable thing, rather than everything at once
Find Balance. Stay informed, but give yourself permission to turn off the news or put down your phone. Getting caught in constant fear and micro-stressors will only leave you completely depleted.
Come Back Into the Present. One question I ask myself when I feel totally overwhelmed by the state of world is What is true for me right now? It brings me back into my space and I name what is true, it might sound as simple as: I am making dinner for my kids.
There is power in the present moment. It brings a grounded clarity and offers a stronger foundation to then move from.
Come Back Home to Your Body.
This can be as simple as:
Taking notice of your breath
Or stepping outside for a walk
A gentle, supportive self hug
Honestly? Sometimes, I just shake my arms and wiggle a bit to help bring me back. Your connection to yourself is your center and it's your power.
Feel What You're Feeling. It's a lot. Rather than shutting down, move through it. You do not need to hold onto the weight of it all.
And remember, it's ok to feel JOY even when the world is hurting.
This is one I have to remind myself often. Both can exist. We are allowed to experience peace, joy, and happiness even in a world that feels heavy.
Above All: Keep Hope Alive. Change is possible, especially when so many people care and come together in peace, and with love.
I truly believe that empaths and sensitives are what our world needs right now. You are here for a reason. But to be the change you so deeply want, you must care for yourself as well.
The old cliche is true: You cannot pour from an empty cup.
With love,
Danica

When I handed in my manuscript to my publisher this past May, I thought a few things might happen: I might feel really vulnerable for having my story "out there." I might celebrate with friends and family for completing a milestone. Or maybe I would simply exhale a huge sigh of relief. What actually happened took me by surprise. After I pressed send on years of hard work, I crumpled onto the kitchen floor and cried for a really long time. Like, an exceptionally long time. And then I took a...

Not the thing you want to hear from the DOCTOR about to perform a complicated surgery on you. ..But here we were! Hospital gown and all. A place I seemed to find myself often: in paper gowns, staring into the eyes of perplexed doctors. It was 2012, at the very height of me hiding my spiritual abilities from the world. Are you waiting for permission to follow your dreams? I definitely was. I always wanted to be a writer. Partly because my introverted and highly sensitive self loved the idea of being alone in a cabin, overlooking a vast river, writing quietly with a cup of coffee. *Bliss* But mostly because I had a love of words and stories. I love to hear people’s stories. I love to share stories. And books have been so transformative on my own journey of healing and self-discovery - finding hope in others'...
