Embracing the Gray

Dear Sensitive Souls,

I'm not sure if it was the pandemic stress, or mom of three stress, or just the inevitable march of time, but about 5 years ago my hair started to turn gray.

After plucking out a strand here and there, I habitually began to have it dyed.

Quickly realizing that this was a commitment of my time and money and I actually hated spending both of those things stuck in a chair.

I had spent the past decade learning to embrace and love my curls, maybe I could learn to love my grays, too?

So, I scoured Pinterest for inspiration (obviously) and saved photos of badass women with gorgeous grey hair.

And then I waited.

...And waited.

And why was this taking so long?

Losing patience with my slow progress I marched into my hairdresser with my Pinterest board and said "What if we just dyed my hair gray?"

Thankfully, she squashed this idea immediately and I continued to go through the awkwardness of having one strange patch of salt and pepper hair above my right eye.

It's been three years to the day since I last dyed my hair and it looks nothing like my Pinterest board baddies, but it looks like my gray hair.

Embracing my hair, both its texture and it's color, has taught me deeper self-acceptance, and in many ways, surrender to the process.

Embracing the Gray

You know I love a vague comparison so, allow me to compare this process to our healing journey?

It's common when healing (especially if you're a perfectionist) to want to find the quick fix, the cure, the person who figured it out that can tell you exactly, and in great detail, what to do to just be healed already.

Just like I walked into my hairdresser asking to expedite the going-gray process, I have walked into my therapist's office begging to expedite the painful feelings, to make the anxiety go away.. to finally be free.

Fix me was the underlying theme.

Change me.

Transport me to the finish line.

And while we can discover tools, and guidance, and even empowerment from others who have walked before us, maybe it's not so much about bypassing the awkward stage and getting to the finish line.

Even if the "quick fixes" worked, they would rob us of the messy middles, the experience itself, and of the wisdom we gain from moving forward, step by step, at our own pace.

If you're a perfectionist, you understand the all-or-nothing thinking, the extremes of black and white, success or failure, with no acknowledgment of the middle, the gray area (see what I did there?), the progress.

Sometimes the best thing we can do to ease the often painful experience of perfectionism, is to find more love and compassion for ourselves. To embrace the messy, the in-betweens, to stay the course with tenderness for ourselves as we keep putting one foot in front of the other.

With so much love,

Danica

P.S. There is no finish line..

Compassion

I couldn't make up these card pulls if I tried.. The compassion card is all about offering yourself some grace, and some more love. See yourself with love, acknowledge what you have walked through, your resilience, your strength. Treat yourself with kindness, no matter what phase you are in. Know that you are worthy of so much love.

Letters to the Sensitive Soul

Hi! I'm Danica, a psychic medium, intuitive mentor, and author. My work is devoted to creating supportive spaces for highly sensitive folks to reconnect with themselves, their bodies, and their inner wisdom. I weave together intuitive guidance, and somatic practices to help ease perfectionism, soften self-criticism, and strengthen self-trust, because I believe spirituality isn’t about transcending ourselves, but deepening into who we are.
