When sensitivity doesn't *feel* like a strength

Dear Sensitive Souls,

We've all heard the saying "Your sensitivity is a gift!"

I know, I say this... It's an entire chapter in my book.

And it's true.

Our sensitivity allows us to pick up on subtle energy, we have a super creative side, and animals just seem drawn to us (my favorite part of the gift?).

But what about the times it doesn't feel like a superpower?

What about when everything just feels intrusive and overwhelming?

Like the holiday season, full of extra social events, loud music streaming from every crevice of the earth, and endless to-do lists?

Or, the lesser talked about summer season, when we find ourselves sharing spaces with other families, the kids have forgotten what bedtime is, and there is sand in everything.

Seriously, where is all this sand coming from?

Now, if you’re not a highly-sensitive-super-feeler, this list of intrusive overwhelming things is just a list of fun (except maybe the to-do lists).

And don't get me wrong, we want to enjoy that list, too, but it really needs to come with some built in breaks.

It’s because of this split that we might end up feeling like we’re being *dramatic* or just feeling really alone in our needs.

So, quick recap, as highly sensitive folks, we have a finely tuned nervous system, we process information on a deep level, and we make up only 20% of the population.

That means most people are definitely *not* experiencing the world the way we are… or the overwhelm that comes with it.

It also means we can find ourselves trying to act normal or keep up with everyone at the expense of ourselves and our needs.

The performance of acting "normal" is, in itself, exhaustingggg.

When everyone in the group wants to stay up late, or go to the next event, or pour another drink, or the itinerary is endlessssss but they seem gung-ho about it all, it can be really hard to pipe up and say "I'm gonna hang back" or "I've gotta get home and go to bed."

Our sensitive selves work hard.

We are constantly scanning, processing information on a deep level, picking up on energy and everything everyone in the room is saying (and not saying).

Zero downtime, disrupted routines, less sleep, endless crowds, and sensory overload can leave us feeling overwhelmed and drained.

But once we become aware of this, once we realize ohhhhhh, I just need to protect those things and I can still hang, it gets a little easier.

These are the key things to check in with when you know you're going to be traveling or entering a busy season of life as a sensitive soul:

  1. Are you getting enough sleep? Everything feels more challenging when we are overtired.
  2. Are you eating nourishing food? Being hangry or eating foods that don't sit well, can leave us totally off balance.
  3. Are you moving your body? Sometimes we just need to move the energy through us.
  4. How are you talking to yourself? Are you being critical of your needs or are you talking to yourself the way you would a friend?
  5. What can you do for yourself that feels soothing? A cup of tea, a cozy sweatshirt, a meditation... find something that helps you feel settled and cozy.

It’s ok to have different needs (we celebrate that here!), and it makes total sense that those needs can sometimes feel isolating. But the more you practice honoring yourself, the easy it gets, and the better off you'll be.

I promise.

How can you honor your beautifully sensitive self today?

Sending you all so much love,

Danica

Angel Message

Cut The Cords

Especially in the face of overwhelm, practice a cord cutting. Start by visualizing any energetic connections to judgement, stress, chaos, or anything weighing you down, and picture these cords breaking from your energy field and falling away. Call on your spirit team and angels to clear your energetic space and feel the peace and clarity that follows.

Letters to the Sensitive Soul

Hi! I'm Danica, a psychic medium, workshop facilitator, and author. My work is all about helping sensitive souls reconnect with themselves, their bodies, and their inner wisdom. I weave together intuitive guidance, and somatic practices to help ease perfectionism, soften self-criticism, and strengthen self-trust, because I believe spirituality isn’t about transcending ourselves, but deepening into who we are.
